Movie Review: Cloverfield

I'll get this out of the way! I impulse bought this movie simply for the reason that J.J. Abrams was the producer. Incase you didn't know, J.J. Abrams is the creator/writer/executive producer of Lost. So I had to see this film.

It's an interesting film to say the very least. I feel that depending on how you look at the film, it can either be very well done or kind of "not interesting" to say the least. Let's take the poor route; Godzilla/sci-fi/horror. It fails here! Miserably. It's typical Godzilla type scares and activities (the tail, the throwing of buildings, the army attacking). So nothing really new there. Now, if you look at it that it is a film meant to portray the documentation of a hostile situation; it's awesome! Very different from most films (and yes, this is SO much better than the Blair Witch Project). The acting between the friends is very real and believable. You really feel they are just doing what they would do in real life rather than acting for a Hollywood high budget blockbuster. This film really stands out on its own. I don't want to say too much...but there are portions here that are incredible! It must be watched on a widescreen, HDTV and also with surround sound! TRUST!

Without spoiling the film too much, be prepared for a heart-wrenching ending, a lot of candid moments that are very intense, and a monster who you really don't get any answers about. After all, Cloverfield is NOT about the monster (this is where J.J. is genius); it's about the people and the method of their story. And this is where the movie triumphs.
